What should have been adversity for me, being diagnosed ADHD / Autistic, I've managed to turn around into a potential growth niche market. Little did I know that when I started my fitness journey 6 years ago at a whopping 132kg and with no fitness experience, that six years later I'd be running my own personal training fitness studio. In April I moved from being a newly qualified coach at a functional fitness gym, to opening the doors of Mindset Personal Training in Masterton, Wairarapa. Everything, from the outset of my fitness journey was about making the most of the opportunities I had been given. A chance meeting with a digital marketing client had me join up as a CrossFit athlete, at 132kg I just concentrated on moving, but as time went by I shed the weight and became a runner, running 5 half marathons despite previously writing off running as something I’d never do. Making it down to 63kg at my lightest. I was given a chance to train as an apprentice PT at the age of 49 and I took the opportunity to do this, fees free and to be able to pass on my love of fitness to others. During this time, I qualified to go to first the regional masters and then to the Australian Masters League competition in Melbourne. Sometime through this whole thing I realised I was ADHD and then Autistic. I also realised this had caused me a lot of problems with learning movements, and dealing with hyper mobility. Roll on to where I am now, I’m passionate about taking my business to other late diagnosed neurodivergent people, also to menopausal women, seniors, teens, adaptive athletes and in fact anyone who doesn’t fit the traditional gym environment. From April, when I chanced on my first PT client, I’ve grown my business to 5 personal training clients. I also have a run club block which I run every 9 weeks. My youngest client is 14 and my oldest graduate from running, did so on her 66th birthday. I’m hoping to specialise in neurodivergent clients, adults and children and get more professional development in that field (to complement my lived experience). My clients have issues with proprioception, interception, nutrition and hypermobility. They get overstimulated, under stimulated and everything else in-between. My home environment is low sensory and is half my garage at the moment with plans to knock into the open car port next door. Space is now my limiting factor. Relationships are paramount, ableism is banished and high expectations are the norm. With my clients I’m seeing not only bodily improvements from understanding how they move and think but also self esteem issues from understanding the many challenges they face. Mindset is a brand that believes in everyone, supports everyone, and welcomes everyone.
